Equipment

Ingredients

Filling

  • 5-6 apples* - finely sliced I used a mandoline to get them really thin and I did not peel mine
  • ¼ cup maple syrup
  • 2 teaspoons cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon nutmeg
  • ¼ teaspoon cardamom can sub more cinnamon but I love the flavor this adds
  • ½ teaspoon sea salt
  • 2 tablespoons all purpose flour can use gluten free all purpose if desired
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Crisp topping

toppings and sides

  • flaky sea salt optional but really kicks up the salted flavor
  • ice cream

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
  • Add apples to a bowl and toss with maple syrup, flour, spices, vanilla and salt. Add apples to your baking/pie dish.
  • Add all crumble ingredients to a bowl and mix together using your fingers until it is a combined and crumbly.
  • Add crisp topping to apples. Bake apple crisp for 45-55 minutes, until browned and cooked through.
  • Serve warm with your favorite toppings and sides.

Notes

*if your apples are small you can use 6, if they are very large use 4. I recommend slicing them and seeing if they will fit in your dish. I used 5 with a combination of bigger and small. This should be able 2.75-3 lbs total.
I recommend using a mandoline to get the apples both thinly and evenly sliced. You do not need to peel the apples, I left the skin on as it adds both fiber and texture.
